Apply for or renew a dangerous goods vehicle licence

You can apply for or renew a dangerous goods vehicle licence by post or in person at a service centre.

Your vehicle must be licensed if the capacity of the containers it transports:

• exceeds 500 litres or kilograms for a container
• exceeds 3000 litres for a single IBC (intermediate bulk container) or total capacity of IBCs, not filled or emptied on the vehicle
• are a Risk Category 3 load for Class 1 (explosives).

To complete the application form (PDF, 1.75MB) you need:

• your personal details
• insurance policy details
• vehicle details (including type of vehicle and registration information)
• a vehicle compliance declaration
• payment.

To apply for a licence:

• the vehicle and equipment must be in a safe condition (PDF, 2.2MB)
• personal protective equipment and vehicle safety equipment must be provided
• the tank design and construction must have documented evidence verifying design approval and tank compliance
• the vehicle must be roadworthy (PDF, 2.2MB)
• the vehicle must satisfy all relevant provisions of the Australian Code for the Transport of Explosives by Road and Rail (AE Code).

You do not need to prove your identity.
