- If you drive a road vehicle to transport dangerous goods over specified capacities, you must be licensed by WorkSafe Tasmania.
- You can apply for or renew a dangerous goods driver licence at a service centre. You can apply for a replacement licence card by email if your licence is lost or damaged.
- The process for renewing a licence is the same as applying.
- A dangerous goods driver licence is valid for 5 years.

About applying for, renewing or replacing a dangerous goods driver licence
You must have a dangerous goods driver licence if the capacity of the containers you transport:
- exceed 500 litres or kilograms for a container
- exceed 3000 litres for a single IBC (Intermediate Bulk Container) or total capacity of IBCs, not filled or emptied on the vehicle
- are a Risk Category 3 load for Class 1 (explosives).
To renew your licence you must apply for a new licence.
You can replace a licence if your current dangerous goods driver licence is lost or damaged.

What you need to apply, renew or replace
To complete the application form (PDF, 978KB) you need:
- your personal details
- dangerous goods driver licence number and expiry date (if renewing)
- details of any driving infringements in the last 5 years
- an applicant declaration signed by a witness.
You must also provide:
- a copy of your driver licence - front and back
- a copy of your certificate(s) relating to approved training courses completed (no more than 6 months old), and
- your identity documents
- payment.
Replacing a dangerous goods driver licence
If your dangerous goods driver licence is lost or stolen and you need to replace it you must:
- complete a dangerous goods driver licence replacement application (PDF, 1.0MB)
- scan or photocopy your identity documents
- email your completed application form and identity documents to wst.licensing@justice.tas.gov.au
Photocopies of identity documents are accepted for replacement dangerous goods driver licence applications only.
It is free to replace a dangerous goods driver licence.
Can I apply, renew or replace?
You must have:
- had a medical fitness test that meets the criteria outlined in the Medical Examination for a Dangerous Goods Licence form (PDF, 4MB), within the previous 6 months
- completed an approved training course within the previous 6 months
- a good driving record for the 5 years before you apply (you will need to declare any penalties or demerit points you have received for driving offences or infringements in the last 5 years).
WorkSafe Tasmania will not grant you a licence if:
- you have been found guilty by a court in Australia of an offence that makes you unsuitable to be the driver of a vehicle transporting dangerous goods
- your driver licence has been cancelled or suspended on grounds that make you unsuitable to be the driver of a vehicle transporting dangerous goods
- you are subject to a court order prohibiting you from being involved in transporting dangerous goods by road.
Replace a lost or damaged dangerous goods driver licence
- your lost or damaged licence must be valid (not expired)
Proving your identity
You must provide documents from the following lists to support your application. All documents must be:
- current
- the originals (not photocopies or certified copies)
You must have:
- One document from category A and 2 documents from category B, or
- Two documents from category A.
- Australian birth certificate (not an extract)
- Australian citizenship papers
- Australian passport (can be expired up to 2 years)
- Australian driver licence
- Australian firearm licence
- Tasmanian Government personal identification card (showing full name)
- Department Home Affairs travel documents or Australian Government issued ImmiCard
- Department of Home Affairs Certificate of Evidence of Resident Status
- Overseas passport.
- Medicare card
- Plastic bank or credit card, with signature
- Department of Veterans' Affairs or Centrelink pensioner concession card
- Births Deaths and Marriages (BDM) change of name or marriage certificate (to prove name change)
- Security guard or crowd controller licence
- Government issued personal photo ID card
- High risk work licence or other photo licence issued by Worksafe Tasmania
- Student ID card
- Visa grant notice/VEVO (if accompanied by an overseas passport).
When changing your name you must provide:
- One document from category A and 2 documents from category B, or
- Two documents from category A
and
- Proof of change of name that links the current name on your card to your new name (like an original BDM issued marriage or change of name certificate).
- Birth certificate
- Passport
- Written statement signed by a Principal Officer confirming attendance at educational institution on a letterhead of that institution
- Student ID card (official birth name only).
