Key info

  • You must complete training to operate a standard taxi before you apply. 
  • You must be at least 20 years of age and have held an Australian driver licence for at least 12 months. You must have a Tasmanian driver licence to drive a taxi in Tasmania.
  • You must complete a medical declaration and understand the Tasmanian road rules.
  • Additional training is required to operate a wheelchair accessible taxi. The training is available through 13cabs, who can be contacted on (03) 6272 9292.

About applying for a taxi licence

A taxi ancillary certificate is a licence which allows you to drive taxis and public passenger vehicles carrying up to 10 passengers (including the driver) for hire or reward.

Please use the online ancillary certificate tool to understand if you need to apply for this licence.

Before you apply, you must successfully complete the standard taxi training course to operate a standard taxi. You must complete additional training if you want to operate a wheelchair accessible taxi. 

How to apply

What you need to apply

Apply for standard taxi licence

You must provide:

  • a completed application form (PDF, 266KB) including trainer certification completed by an approved accredited trainer or your certificate from 13cabs confirming the standard taxi training has been completed
  • a completed driver licence application form (PDF, 1.6MB)
  • your current Tasmanian licence or proof of identity documents
  • current nationally coordinated criminal history check dated within 6 months from the application date
  • a current Tasmanian registration to work with vulnerable people
  • a medical report (if you have declared any medical conditions other than visual aids)
  • your work visa (if applicable). 

Apply for a standard taxi licence and a wheelchair accessible taxi licence

In addition to the standard taxi licence requirements, the wheelchair accessible taxi training section on the application form must be completed by your 13cabs trainer. 

Add a wheelchair accessible taxi licence to an existing standard taxi licence

To add a wheelchair accessible taxi licence to your existing standard licence, you must provide: 

  • the completed application form (PDF, 266KB) with the wheelchair accessible taxi training section completed by your 13cabs trainer
  • a completed driver licence application form (PDF, 1.6MB)
  • your Tasmanian driver licence or identity documents
  • a medical report (if you have declared any medical conditions other than visual aids).

Can I apply?

You can apply for a standard taxi licence if you:

  • have successfully completed the standard taxi training to operate a standard taxi
  • have held a current Australian driver licence for at least 12 months (you must convert your licence to Tasmania if your current licence is held in another state)
  • are at least 20 years of age and have held your driver licence for at least 2 out of the past 3 years before you make an application, or
  • are 21 years or older and have held your driver licence for at least one year out of the past 3 years before you make application
  • are an Australian or New Zealand Citizen, permanent resident, or hold a visa allowing you to work in Australia
  • can provide a nationally coordinated criminal history check
  • hold a current Tasmanian registration to work with vulnerable people
  • understand the Tasmanian road rules (PDF, 4.4MB) and the public passenger vehicle operating requirements.

    To apply for a wheelchair accessible taxi licence you must: 

    • have successfully completed the wheelchair accessible taxi training provided by 13cabs.

    Proving your identity

    There are 2 ways to prove your identity:

    1. Your Tasmanian driver licence

    You can show your driver licence, even if it expired up to 2 years ago.

    2. Provide identity documents

    If you don't have a Tasmanian driver licence you must show at least:

    • one category A document and 2 category B documents, or
    • two category A documents and one category B document.

    These documents must:

    • show your current Tasmanian address
    • be the originals (not photocopies, certified copies or laminated)
    • be in English or provided with an English translation from an accredited translator.

    • Australian birth certificate (not an extract or commemorative certificate)
    • Australian citizenship papers
    • Australian passport (can be expired up to 2 years)
    • Overseas passport/visa (can be expired up to 2 years if accompanied by a current Australian visa)
    • Australian photo driver licence (can be expired up to 2 years)
    • Australian firearms licence
    • Tasmanian Government personal information card (showing your full name)
    • Department of Home Affairs travel documents or Australian Government issued Immicard
    • Department of Home Affairs certificate of evidence of resident status.

    • Medicare card
    • Bank or credit card, with signature
    • Student identity card with photo, issued by an Australian educational institution
    • Department of Veterans' Affairs or Centrelink - pensioner concession or other current entitlement card issued by the Australian Government
    • Births, Deaths and Marriages change of name/marriage certificate (not a church or celebrant document) or deed poll
    • High risk work licence issued by WorkSafe Tasmania
    • Government issued working with vulnerable people card.

    If you have changed your address or name

    If your name or address is incorrect on your licence or any documents you use to prove your identity, you must show evidence of:

    • your address, and/or
    • change of name documents.

    To show evidence of change of address you must provide one of the following documents:

    • Financial institution statement
    • Lease or rent agreement
    • Council rate notice
    • Utility account (electricity, water, sewerage, telephone, gas)
    • Aurora+ phone application (name and address details must match the applicant's and be visible when sighted at a service centre. Must not be a screenshot)  
    • Land tax valuation notice
    • Australian Taxation Office assessment (current or last financial year)
    • Certificate of title.

    To show evidence of change of name you must provide one of the following documents:

    • Adoption paper issued by court
    • Divorce paper issued by court, showing your original name
    • Change of name registration issued by Births, Deaths and Marriages or deed poll
    • Guardianship order
    • Marriage certificate issued by Births, Deaths and Marriages (not a church or celebrant issued document).

    More Information

    • Please note that completing the induction training to operate a standard taxi does not guarantee that your application will be approved, you must meet all the eligibility criteria.
    • If your application is approved, this will be added to your Tasmanian licence and you can begin driving a taxi right away.
    • If there is a problem with your application it will be sent to Transport Services for review and you will be contacted within 7 days.
