Key info

  • You must apply to register the vehicle in Tasmania within 3 months of arrival. For standard vehicles, such as cars, caravans, and trailers, standard registration requirements apply. You must have the vehicle inspected at an approved inspection station (AIS).
  • Once your vehicle has passed inspection, you can visit a service centre to register. You must bring the passed AIS inspection report, proof of entitlement and your Tasmanian licence or proof of identity.  You will need to hand in any existing plates at the service centre when you complete your registration. Payment must also be made.
  • After your vehicle has been registered in Tasmania you can contact the interstate authority, where the vehicle was previously registered, and apply for a refund of that remaining registration.
  • For more information on transferring a vehicle registration from interstate, please visit Transport Services.
