About completing a learner driver licence knowledge test
There are 2 ways you can complete a learner driver knowledge test:
- Create an account or login at myServiceTas and complete the Plates Plus course online
Once you have created a myServiceTas account you can login and Register for Plates Plus to get a client ID. You can then access the Plates Plus course which takes around 4 hours. You can save the test as you work through at your own pace. Once completed you are given access to the driver knowledge test.
We encourage you to complete the online Plates Plus course if you can access it. Data shows that customers who attempt the standalone test are unlikely to pass.
- Take the test at a service centre
Complete the standalone driver knowledge test a service centre.

What you need to complete a test
To complete the Plates Plus course online, you first need to get a client ID:
- create an account or login to myServiceTas
- follow the steps to Register for Plates Plus to get a client ID number. You will need one of the following documents:
- Australian birth certificate
- Australian passport
- International passport (with Australian Visa)
- Immicard
You can then use your client ID number to log in and complete the Plates Plus course and driver knowledge test.
To complete the Plates Plus course online, if you already have a client ID:
- log in to Plates Plus using your client ID and date of birth
If you have lost or forgotten your client ID, please visit a service centre or call us on 1300 135 513.
To complete the test in a service centre, you need to:
- provide proof of your identity to get your Test ID number, and
- complete the driver knowledge test.
Can I complete a test?
You must be:
- a new driver and more than 15 years and 11 months old, or
- applying to renew your learner licence, or
- converting an overseas driver licence from a non-recognised country.
You cannot complete a learner driver licence knowledge test at a service centre if you have any convictions or periods of ineligibility that would prevent you from applying for a licence.
Proving your identity
To prove your identity at myServiceTas you will need one of the following documents:
- Australian birth certificate
- Australian passport
- International passport (with Australian Visa)
- ImmiCard
To prove your identity at a service centre you must show at least:
- One category A document and 2 category B documents, or
- Two category A documents and one category B document.
These documents must:
- show your current Tasmanian address
- be the originals (not photocopies, certified copies or laminated)
- be in English or provided with an English translation from an accredited translator.
- Australian birth certificate (not an extract or commemorative certificate)
- Australian citizenship papers
- Australian passport (can be expired up to 2 years)
- Overseas passport or visa (can be expired up to 2 years if accompanied by a current Australian visa)
- Australian photo driver licence (can be expired up to 2 years)
- Australian firearms licence
- Tasmanian Government personal information card (showing your full name)
- Department of Home Affairs travel documents or Australian Government issued Immicard
- Department of Home Affairs certificate of evidence of resident status.
- Medicare card
- Bank or credit card, with signature
- Student identity card with photo, issued by an Australian educational institution
- Department of Veterans' Affairs or Centrelink - pensioner concession or other current entitlement card issued by the Australian Government
- Births, Deaths and Marriages change of name/marriage certificate (not a church or celebrant document) or deed poll
- High risk work licence issued by WorkSafe Tasmania
- Government issued working with vulnerable people or children card.
If you have changed your address or name
If your name or address is incorrect on your licence or any documents you use to prove your identity, you must show proof of:
- your address, and/or
- change of name documents.
To show proof of change of address you must provide one of the following documents:
- financial institution statement
- lease or rent agreement
- council rate notice
- utility account (electricity, water, sewerage, telephone, gas)
- Aurora+ phone application (name and address details must match the applicant's and be visible when sighted at a service centre. Must not be a screenshot)
- land tax valuation notice
- Australian Taxation Office assessment (current or last financial year)
- certificate of title.
To show proof of change of name you must provide one of the following documents:
- adoption paper issued by court
- divorce paper issued by court, showing your original name
- change of name registration issued by Births, Deaths and Marriages or deed poll
- guardianship order
- marriage certificate issued by Births, Deaths and Marriages (not a church or celebrant issued document).
Body corporate (a company or an incorporated association)
At least one of the documents from the section below must be provided. Additional documents may also be required to prove the current:
- residential address
- garage address
- change of name of the body corporate.
- Certificate of registration with an Australian Company Number (ACN)
- Certificate of registration of change of name with an ACN
- Extract of company with ACN
- Certificate of registration of foreign company with Australian Registered Body Number (ARBN)
- Certificate of incorporation
- Written authorisation on letterhead by the issuing authority, stating the Act under which it was established.
- Certificate of registration of change of name with an ACN
- Written authorisation on letterhead by the issuing authority, stating the Act under which established.

More Information
- When you pass the driver knowledge test you need to visit a service centre to apply for a learner driver licence.
- If you fail the driver knowledge test, you can either:
- re-sit the test at a service centre the next business day, or
- complete the Plates Plus course and test again online after 12 hours.
- Interpreters are available in Burnie, Devonport, Glenorchy, Hobart, Launceston and Rosny if booked in advance. Please let Service Tasmania know if you need an interpreter when booking your driving assessment.
