  • A conveyance allowance is paid to a parent or guardian to help with the cost of student travel from home to school, or to the closest bus stop servicing that school.
  • A private car travel payment is available to help with the cost of using a private car to take a student from home to school or a bus stop servicing that school.
  • An air travel payment is available to help toward the cost of using air travel to take a student from home, on a Bass Strait Island, to an educationally appropriate school on mainland Tasmania or Australia.
  • A student is also eligible for the allowance if they live within 5 km of a bus stop but are unable to catch a bus due to a medical condition or disability.

    About applying for a conveyance allowance

    You must make a new application for the conveyance allowance every year.

    • If you apply between 1 January and 15 May, your application will be assessed for the whole year.
    • If you apply between 16 May and 15 November, your application will be assessed for term 3 and term 4 only.

    If a student does not attend school for a significant number of days, the amount of conveyance allowance they get may be reduced.

    What you need to apply

    To apply online you must provide:

    • personal details of the applicant and student(s)
    • a certificate of enrolment from the student's school
    • a current medical report or certificate (if the student is unable to catch a bus due to a medical condition or disability)
    • a letter from a church leader (if the student attends a specific school due to faith. Participation in a faith-based institution outside of school must be proven)
    • details of all proposed travel (for private car)
    • bank details to have the allowance paid in to.

    To apply by post or email you must provide:

    • a completed application form for private car travel (PDF, 862KB), or
    • a completed application form for air travel (PDF, 137KB)
    • personal details of the applicant and student(s)
    • a certificate of enrolment from the student's school
    • a current medical report or certificate (if the student is unable to catch a bus due to a medical condition or disability)
    • a letter from a church leader (if the student attends a specific school due to faith. Participation in a faith-based institution outside of school must be proven)
    • details of all proposed travel (for private car travel)
    • bank details to have the allowance paid in to.

      Can I apply?

      A parent or guardian must lodge the application, even if their child is over 16.

      In the case of shared parental responsibility where the parents or legal guardians live separately, please email passenger.transport@stategrowth.tas.gov.au or call 1300 135 513 for more information.

      For private car travel, a student must:

      • be aged between 5 and 18 in the year you apply
      • be enrolled full time (includes kindergarten)
      • be enrolled at a school recognised by the Department for Education, Children and Young People
      • live outside an area with an urban bus service
      • live more than 5 km from the nearest government intake area school, educationally appropriate school or bus stop servicing the school.

      For air travel a student must:

      • be aged between 5 and 18 in the year you apply
      • be enrolled full time (includes kindergarten)
      • be enrolled at a school recognised by the Department for Education, Children and Young People
      • live on a Bass Strait Island
      • be in grade 11 or 12 or need to attend an educationally appropriate school on mainland Tasmania or Australia.

      Proving your identity

      You do not need to prove your identity to apply. However, all information will be cross-checked with information from the Department for Education, Children and Young People and the Department of State Growth.

      There is no cost associated with this service.

      There is no payment required for this service.

      • If the details on your application change, you must update the Department of State Growth within 7 days. Updating your details may affect your allowance payments.
      • If your application is rejected and you disagree with the decision, you can request a review. You can email or post a letter explaining why you disagree and if possible, providing more information that supports your application.
