    About applying for or renewing an asbestos removalist licence

    You need a licence from WorkSafe Tasmania to be an asbestos removalist. There are 2 types of asbestos removalist licences:

    Class A asbestos removal

    This licence is:

    • needed for removing friable asbestos, non-friable asbestos and asbestos contaminated dust
    • not needed for removing asbestos containing material that is associated with removing non-friable asbestos or is only a minor contamination.

    Class B asbestos removal

    This licence is needed for removing:

    • non-friable asbestos or asbestos containing material
    • asbestos contaminated dust associated with removing more than 10m2 of non-friable asbestos.

    How to apply or renew

    What you need to apply or renew

    You must provide:

    • a completed application form (PDF, 1.1MB)
    • proof that each supervisor has at least 3 years of relevant industry experience
    • a copy of proof of identity documents for each named supervisor
    • a certificate of currency for workers compensation insurance. This does not apply if you are an exempt employer
    • a copy of your certificate of registration of trading name (if you will be trading under a business name)
    • a copy of the certificate of incorporation of the corporate body (if you are applying as a corporate body)
    • payment.

    For a Class A asbestos removal licence, you must also provide:

    • a copy of the certification issued to each named supervisor for the specified VET accredited courses for:
      • Class A asbestos removal work
      • Class B asbestos removal work, and
      • asbestos removal supervision for asbestos removal work.
    • evidence that you have a safety management system certified as being compliant with AS 4801:2001 or equivalent safety management system. Certification may be made by a JAS-ANZ accredited conformity assessment body or RABQSA certified auditor (now known as Exemplar Global).

    For a Class B asbestos removal licence, you must also provide a copy of the certification issued to each named supervisor for the specified VET accredited courses for:

    • Class B asbestos removal work, and
    • asbestos removal supervision for asbestos removal work.

    Can I apply or renew?

    You must:

    • be a person conducting a business or undertaking
    • include the name of your nominated supervisor
    • fill out your details in the nominated supervisor section if you as an individual applicant will also be the nominated supervisor
    • show proof that the supervisor is at least 18 years old.

    Proving your identity

    You must provide documents from the following lists to support your application. All documents must be:

    • current
    • the originals (not photocopies or certified copies)

    You must have:

    • One document from category A and 2 documents from category B, or
    • Two documents from category A.

    • Australian birth certificate (not an extract)
    • Australian citizenship papers
    • Australian passport (can be expired up to 2 years)
    • Australian driver licence
    • Australian firearm licence
    • Tasmanian Government personal identification card (showing full name)
    • Department Home Affairs travel documents or Australian Government issued ImmiCard
    • Department of Home Affairs Certificate of Evidence of Resident Status
    • Overseas passport.

    • Medicare card
    • Plastic bank or credit card, with signature
    • Department of Veterans' Affairs or Centrelink pensioner concession card
    • Births Deaths and Marriages (BDM) change of name or marriage certificate (to prove name change)
    • Security guard or crowd controller licence
    • Government issued personal photo ID card
    • High risk work licence or other photo licence issued by Worksafe Tasmania
    • Student ID card
    • Visa grant notice/VEVO (if accompanied by an overseas passport).

    When changing your name you must provide:

    • One document from category A and 2 documents from category B, or
    • Two documents from category A

    and

    • Proof of change of name that links the current name on your card to your new name (like an original BDM issued marriage or change of name certificate).

    • Birth certificate
    • Passport
    • Written statement signed by a Principal Officer confirming attendance at educational institution on a letterhead of that institution
    • Student ID card (official birth name only).

    • WorkSafe Tasmania will not issue an asbestos removal licence or asbestos assessor licence if you hold an equivalent licence from another state/territory/the Commonwealth, unless the licence is due for renewal.
