About applying for or renewing a body corporate security agent licence

You must first apply online, you still need to visit a service centre to prove your identity and have your photo taken. Your application cannot be fully processed until you have completed these steps.

If your application is successful, you receive a licence certificate. You will be able to download a copy from the My Licence portal.

You will be sent a renewal reminder notice about 8 weeks before your licence expires.

If the option to renew your licence is no longer available through the My Licence portal, you must submit a new application online.

How to apply or renew

What you need to apply or renew

To apply for a licence, you must provide:

  • details of all directors (each director will need to complete the suitability questions online)
  • proof of identity documents for all directors
  • last financial statement or a letter from an auditor to say the company is a viable concern
  • full company extract
  • national personal insolvency index records (bankruptcy statements) for all directors dated within the last month.

You must also:

  • pay a fee (either online or at a service centre) and have your fingerprints checked at a Tasmania Police station.

To renew a licence, you must login to the My Licence portal and provide:

  • details of all directors (each director will need to complete the suitability questions online)
  • last financial statement or a letter from an auditor to say the company is a viable concern
  • full company extract
  • national personal insolvency index records (bankruptcy statements) for all directors dated within the last month
  • payment.

Can I apply or renew?

Each company director must meet the requirements listed below:

  • be at least 18 years old
  • not be a bankrupt
  • have set up a trust account for the deposit of money received from your clients (commercial agents only)
  • have the relevant training (depending on the category of licence you are applying for).

    Your company must also have a nominated manager.

    Proving your identity

    You do not need to prove your identity for processes that you can complete online.

    If visiting a service centre you must provide 4 documents from the following lists to support your application. All the documents must be current and the combination of documents must contain your:

    • Given name and family name in full
    • Date of birth
    • Photograph.

    If you bring copies of your original certificates they must be certified by a Commissioner for Declarations or a Justice of the Peace (JP).

    You must have:

    • One commencement of identity document
    • One primary use in community document
    • Two secondary use in community documents.

    • Full Australian birth certificate (not an extract or commemorative certificate) issued by Births, Deaths and Marriages
    • Australian passport
    • Australian visa current at the time of entry into Australia as a resident or tourist supported by current overseas passport. If you do not have evidence of your current visa, please contact the Australian Department of Home Affairs.
    • Australian Government issued ImmiCard showing your visa and/or migration status.
    • Australian citizenship certificate.

    If you were born in Australia and do not have a commencement in the community document, please get a certificate from the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages in the state or territory where you were born.

    • Current Australian driver licence, learner permit or provisional licence issued with a signature and photo and the same name as claimed
    • Current overseas passport with a valid entry stamp or visa
    • Australian marriage certificate (church or celebrant-issued certificates are not accepted)
    • Current proof of age or photo identity card issued by an Australian Government agency in the name of the applicant, with a photo
    • Current Australian Shooters or firearms licence showing a signature and photo (minor or junior permits or licences not accepted)
    • A current student identification card with a signature or photo (for persons under 18 years of age with no other primary identification documents).

    • Medicare card
    • Australian private health insurance card
    • Australian security guard or crowd control photo licence
    • Department of Veteran Affairs or Centrelink pensioner concession card (card or interim letter are suitable evidence - statements will not be accepted)
    • Consular photo identity card issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade
    • Photo identity card issued by the Australian Defence Force
    • Photo identity card issued to an officer by a police force
    • Photo identity card issued by the Australian Government or a state or territory government (may be a working with children or vulnerable people card or a government issued occupational licence)
    • Australian secondary or tertiary student photo identity card 
    • Certified academic transcript from an Australian university or a registered higher education provider
    • State/territory government rates assessment notice or Australian Tax Office assessment notice
    • Australian utility bill showing your name and address
    • Aurora+ phone application (name and address details must match the applicant's and be visible when sighted at a service centre. Must not be a screenshot)  
    • Bank card, credit card, or bank statement (without recording the payment or card numbers)
    • Relationship certificate issued by a state or territory Births, Deaths and Marriages
    • Australian Electoral Commission enrolment
    • Australian Trade Association card
    • Australian aviation security identification card
    • Australian maritime security identification card
    • Australian firearms licence
    • Certificate of identity issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to refugees and non-Australian citizens for entry to Australia
    • Document of identity issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to Australian citizens or persons who have the nationality of a Commonwealth country for travel purposes
    • Convention travel document secondary (United Nations) issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade
    • Consular photo identity card issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade
    • Overseas government issued documents (for example, drivers licence)
    • Credit reference check
    • Trusted referees report

    All proof of identity documents must show your full name. If you have changed your name and the documents show your old name, you must also show one of these documents:

    • Change of name registration issued by Births, Deaths and Marriages, deed poll or overseas issuing authority
    • Marriage certificate issued by Births, Deaths and Marriages (or interstate/overseas registry office equivalent). Church or celebrant issued certificates are not accepted
    • Divorce papers issued by court, showing your original name
    • Guardianship order
    • Relationship certificate
    • Adoption papers issued by court.
