Key info

  • Reptiles and amphibians are protected in Tasmania. Only limited specimens can be kept without a permit.
  • A permit is required to keep a reptile or amphibian as a pet. There is no fee for this permit. You must submit your completed application (PDF, 202KB) by email to wildlife.services@nre.tas.gov.au or by post to Wildlife Services, GPO Box 44, Hobart 7001. 
  • There are specific permits for educational (PDF, 268KB) and business (PDF, 267KB) purposes. There are fees for these permits. You can get the application forms and pay the fee at a service centre.  
  • You must comply with a code of practice.
