Key info

  • All firearms must be registered in Tasmania.
  • If your firearm is registered in another state, you must apply for a Tasmanian firearms licence and register the firearm in Tasmania. Proof of interstate registration may be required.
  • If you are a firearms dealer, you must show your firearms dealer licence when registering a firearm.
  • You must lodge your application at a service centre.

About applying to register a firearm

All firearms must be registered in Tasmania. All purchases of a firearm must be made through a licensed firearms dealer.

If you move to Tasmania, you must apply for a Tasmanian firearms licence within 7 days of arrival and register any firearms you own within:

  • 90 days for longarm firearms
  • 7 days for handguns.

What you need to apply

If you are a dealer, you must:

  • bring a completed application form (PDF, 473KB)
  • bring your firearms dealer licence card
  • bring a copy of the invoice for the firearm purchase (unless supplier details are included in the form).

If you are registering a firearm registered interstate, you must:

  • bring your interstate registration certificate (if available)
  • bring your Tasmanian firearms licence  (if available)
  • pay the fee.

Can I apply?

You can apply if you have a:

  • dealer licence endorsed with the category of firearm you are registering, or
  • registered firearm from interstate with a firearms licence.

Proving your identity

You do not need to prove your identity.
