About changing a class for registration to work with vulnerable people

Changing your class of registration must be done online but you can choose to pay the fee at a service centre.

Your card will take up to 21 days to arrive by post.

How to change

What you need to change

You must have the following information when you:

Change your class online

  • your registration number
  • last name
  • date of birth
  • your phone or email address to receive a code.

Once you have logged in, you need to:

  • change your class from volunteer to employment/volunteer
  • add your employer, and
  • pay the fee.

If you do not want to pay the fee online, you can pay at a service centre.

If you want to make the payment at a service centre

  • bring your reference or card number
  • provide full proof of identity
  • pay the fee.

Your class of registration will be updated as soon as payment is made and we will send you a new registration card within 3 weeks.

Can I change?

You must have a current working with vulnerable people card.

You must be a currently classed as a volunteer and be moving to a role where you are paid.

It is an offence to use a volunteer registration if you are receiving payment or other material benefit or reward.

Proving your identity

You do not need to prove your identity for processes that you can complete online.

If visiting a service centre you must provide 4 documents from the following lists to support your application. All the documents must be current.

If you bring copies of your original certificates they must be certified by a Commissioner for Declarations or a Justice of the Peace (JP).

You must have:

  • One commencement of identity document
  • One primary use in community document
  • Two secondary use in community documents.

  • Full Australian birth certificate (not an extract or commemorative certificate) issued by Births, Deaths and Marriages
  • Australian passport
  • Australian visa current at the time of entry into Australia as a resident or tourist supported by current overseas passport. If you do not have evidence of your current visa, please contact the Australian Department of Home Affairs.
  • Australian Government issued ImmiCard showing your visa and/or migration status. If you don't have evidence of your current visa, please contact the Australian Department of Home Affairs.
  • Identity certificate issued by Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to:
    • refugees and non-Australian citizens for entry into Australia
    • Australian citizens who have the nationality of a Commonwealth country for travel purposes
  • Australian citizenship or naturalisation certificate (including citizenship by descent).

If you were born in Australia and do not have a commencement in the community document, please get a certificate from the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages in the state or territory where you were born.

  • Current Australian driver licence, learner permit or provisional licence issued with a signature and photo
  • Current overseas passport with a valid visa
  • Australian marriage certificate (church or celebrant-issued certificates are not accepted)
  • Current proof of age or photo identity card issued by an Australian Government agency with a signature and photo
  • Current firearms licence showing a signature and photo (minor or junior permits or licences not accepted)
  • A current student identification card (for persons under 18 years of age).

  • Medicare card
  • Australian security guard or crowd control licence
  • Department of Veteran Affairs or Centrelink pensioner concession card or other entitlement card issued by Australian Government (card or interim letter are suitable evidence - statements will not be accepted)
  • Consular photo identity card issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade
  • Photo identity card issued by the Australian Defence Force
  • Police force ID card issued to an officer
  • Student identity card with photo issued by educational institution - if no expiry date, will be accepted up to 2 years from issue date
  • Academic transcript from an Australian university up to 12 months from issue date
  • Council rates assessment notice issued within the last 12 months
  • Utility bill issued within the last 12 months showing your name and address
  • Bank account or credit card, with your name in full and your signature (if you use 2 cards they must be from different financial institutions)
  • Bank statement or letter issued within the last 12 months including your name in full, account number or account type and financial institution letterhead or branch stamp.

All proof of identity documents must show your full name. If you have changed your name and the documents show your old name, you must also show one of these documents:

  • Change of name registration issued by Births, Deaths and Marriages, deed poll or overseas issuing authority
  • Marriage certificate issued by Births, Deaths and Marriages (or interstate/overseas registry office equivalent). Church or celebrant issued certificates are not accepted
  • Divorce papers issued by court, showing your original name
  • Guardianship order
  • Relationship certificate
  • Adoption papers issued by court.

More Information

    • Please allow up to 3 weeks for your new card to be received by post.
    • Changing your class of registration to employee/volunteer will not change your original expiry date.
    • If you want to change your class of registration to employment/volunteer, you can complete an early renewal up to 365 days before your expiry date. This will mean you won't have to pay a change of class fee and the renewal fee within the same year.
