About changing a class for registration to work with vulnerable people

Changing your class of registration from volunteer to employment/volunteer must be done online but you can choose to pay the fee at a service centre.

Your card will take up to 21 days to arrive by post.

Changing your class of registration from employment/volunteer to volunteer can be done when you renew your registration.

How to change

What you need to change

When you change your class online you must have:

  • your registration number
  • last name
  • date of birth
  • your phone or email address to receive a code.

Once you have logged in, you need to:

  • change your class from volunteer to employment/volunteer
  • add your employer, and
  • pay the fee.

If you do not want to pay the fee online, you can pay at a service centre.

To make a payment at a service centre, you must:

  • bring your online receipt or reference number
  • pay the fee.

Your class of registration will be updated as soon as payment is made and we will send you a new registration card within 3 weeks.

If you are under 18 a parent or legal guardian must come with you. Your parent or legal guardian must:

  • show identification (4 documents that show their given name and family name in full, date of birth and include their photograph)
  • provide a link between the applicant and parent or legal guardian (which can be done with a birth certificate or guardianship documentation)
  • consent to the terms and conditions.

Can I change?

You must have a current working with vulnerable people card.

You must be a currently classed as a volunteer and be moving to a role where you are paid.

It is an offence to use a volunteer registration if you are receiving payment or other material benefit or reward.

Proving your identity

You do not need to prove your identity unless:

  • you request a new photo to be taken (optional), or
  • your most recent photo was taken more than 10 years ago

There are 2 ways to prove your identity for a photo to be taken:

1. Your registration to work with vulnerable people card

You can show your registration to work with vulnerable people card, even if it expired up to 2 years ago.

2. Provide a current photo identity document 

If you're unable to provide the original document, a copy must be certified by a Commissioner for Declarations or a Justice of the Peace (JP).

  • Australian passport
  • Australian Government issued ImmiCard (with a photo)
  • Current Australian driver licence, learner permit or provisional licence issued with a signature and photo and the same name as claimed
  • Current overseas passport with a valid entry stamp or visa
  • Current proof of age or photo identity card issued by an Australian Government agency in the name of the applicant, with a photo
  • Current Australian Shooters or firearms licence showing a signature and photo (minor or junior permits or licences not accepted)
  • A current student identification card with a signature or photo (for persons under 18 years of age with no other primary identification documents).

In addition to the above, if your name has changed you must provide one of the following documents:

  • Change of Name Registration issued by Births, Deaths and Marriages; Deed Poll or overseas issuing authority
  • Marriage Certificate issued by Births, Deaths and Marriages (or interstate/overseas registry office equivalent) Note: church or celebrant issued certificates are not accepted
  • Divorce papers issued by Court, indicating the name being reverted to
  • Guardianship Order
  • Relationship certificate
  • Adoption papers issued by Court

More Information

    • Please allow up to 3 weeks for your new card to be received by post.
    • Changing your class of registration to employee/volunteer will not change your original expiry date.
    • If you want to change your class of registration to employment/volunteer, you can complete an early renewal up to 365 days before your expiry date. This will mean you won't have to pay a change of class fee and the renewal fee within the same year.
